The Home Healthcare Worker: Emerging Occupational Safety and Health Challenges Opportunities for both the home healthcare worker and their patients/clients

Abstract: The graying of the U.S. population is a major challenge for health care. Medicare enrollment is projected to increase by more than 50% over the next 15 years from 54 million beneficiaries today to more than 80 million in 2030. There are several healthcare challenges with baby boomers with 88% of people 65 years or older having at least one chronic condition, with a 25% of these having four or more conditions. It is estimated that chronic illness accounts for 75% of total national health care expenditures. This presentation will provide an overview of Ergonomic principles that help reduce and prevent musculoskeletal disorders during patient/client handling, a case study identifying 5 key high risk work activities during patient/client handling, and solutions to reduce and prevent such injuries not only for the home healthcare worker but also for the patient/client.
