Design Models for Creating & Maintaining Situational Awareness (SA)

Speaker: Norm Eavey

Meeting Summary:

A brief discussion regarding application of SA modeling concepts will focus attention upon human capacities and limitations for good decision making during routine vs dynamic circumstances. SA oriented modeling methodology (example: cognitive human factors) can facilitate effective information processing and decision making in OEHS/IH programming using systematic design approaches to control environmental states.

The discussion will include:

  • Primary cognitive human factors associated with “developing, maintaining or losing SA” will be highlighted to specifically enhance outcomes in complex, uncertain, or ambiguous conditions.
  • Examples will be provided regarding the “role of end-user mental models” to facilitate understanding outcomes from maintaining SA (maps & measures).
  • SA models that have been deployed successfully in domains such as military, firefighting, and even sports performance and motor-sports racing.
  • Industrial Hygiene strategy for assessing and managing in disaster safety, emergency management/incident command as it relates to SA research findings. Safety Orientation content for new hires at Columbus Regional Hospital includes training in applied SA design; content to be discussed.

About the Speaker:

Norman Eavey obtained his MS in 1996 from University of Michigan in Industrial & Environmental Health with directed research in Occupational Ergonomics, investigating factors associated with return to work & upper extremity cumulative trauma.

Norman has 26 years of experience with key roles in OEHS/IH related to work performance, currently working as the Environmental & Workforce Safety Officer at Columbus Regional Health (CRH) in Columbus, Indiana. He is responsible for the Safety Management Planning, chairs the CRH Safety Committee and is a member of the Hospital Quality & Safety Practice Council at the 225 bed facility. Eavey is also lead technical advisor for Safe Patient Handling. Eavey has been at CRH since 1996.

His experience also includes:

  • Member of both Human Factors & Ergonomics Society and the American Industrial Hygiene Association, his primary field of expertise is applied occupational biomechanics and work physiology.  Consultant to 1000+ companies on human factors & ergonomic /IH issues in an estimated 10,000+ job categories.
  • In 2008, he had a field appointment to Disaster Safety Officer, during FEMA/Homeland Security deployment for a massive flooding event which closed CRH for several months. He has been involved with Life Safety, construction safety, business continuity, risk assessment and emergency management since that time.
  • Presented at several State and National conferences on topics such as Ergonomics, Outcomes Measurement and Management, and Overcoming Ambiguity in Disasters.
